I'm writing more frequently than I thought I would! That in itself is an accomplishment, and I'm glad that I have easy access to a computer without bringing my own. I haven't written for the past two days, so I'll update y'all on my journeys.
Two days ago, I decided to walk the seven miles to Punta Sur, the southernmost tip of the island. I'm staying on the northern tip, so basically I walked the entire island. It took about three hours or so, and I found some pretty cool stuff. The beach on the Caribbean side was covered in small pieces of coral, and shells. The coral looked like baby brain coral, and the shells were mostly Conch shells. Most of the Conch shells were broken, but they were still cool looking as they would wear in a way that would make them look like little roses. I also found a huge shell which was bright orange and at least a foot long, but I'm not entirely sure what animal resided in it before it washed up on the beach. At Punta Sur there was a display of about ten sculptures of varying styles. I really only liked one of them, which was sort of Mayan looking, and snapped a couple photos which I will add to this post later. There was also a walkway which led to the easternmost tip of the island, which also happens to be the easternmost tip of Mexico. It was a pretty cool sight and I'm glad I walked all the way down there!
When I got back, I got some food, went out to a bar, and got a bit trashed. I was there to watch the USA vs. Mexico Futbol game, and ended up talking to this older guy for the duration of the game. We had interesting conversation for a couple of hours, and then he asked me if I was gay, and picked up my check even though I told him I wasn't and won't ever be! Score, free beers all night!
The next day I was going to switch from the hotel I've been staying at to the hostel down the street, because it's cheaper and easier to meet people. The desk clerk who I befriended told me I could stay two more nights for cinceunta (150) pesos, which is about fifteen dollars. That was cheaper than two nights at the hostel and I had my own room still! I gave him a joint I had later on that day, and smoked my other one and passed out on a pile of beach chairs on, well, the beach. I woke up a couple hours later and went back to my hotel room for a better rest.
Today the clerk and I went out for a beer at noon, which turned into six beers, and I got pretty trashed. I went to the beach to swim, but met these two older ladies who bought me a beer and gave me cigaros. I then went drunkenly swimming for a couple hours, went back to my room, took a nap and then got some Pizza. The girl that works at the pizza place is originally from Chicago, but has been living down here for fifteen years! She only makes ten dollars a day, so it is hard for her to even go back to the states to visit. She claimed it would take about two years to save the money for a plane ticket alone. I felt sorry for her, but she seems to have a good life on this small island and is not complaining.
Well, I'm either going out for beers and live music, or am going to smoke a jizzle on the bizzle. We'll see what happens next!
Hasta Luego,
Seamus
